Construction of this 181-bed hospital required the largest ever concrete raft floor poured in New Zealand – a full 13,500 sqm. Quality would need to be immaculate to allow the laying of specialised linoleum flooring for hygiene purposes. Cracks were an absolute no-no.
To make the job even more challenging, ground conditions were poor. A base of river gravel called for steel I-beams in a 3.6m grid.
The design engineer specified Conqra’s Polyraft system and insisted on additional Conqra Stunna componentry to ensure maximum stability and minimise the risk of cracking. The Conqra team made weekly site visits to assist with installation and ensure the optimum result.
Southland Hospital is New Zealand’s largest ever concrete raft floor. In service since 2005, it has demonstrated excellent stability and strength with no cracking. The success of this project has led to further large commercial raft flooring projects with contractors such as Dominion, Ebberts, and Watson Hughes.
“You should be proud of your efforts. We know that Conqra’s input and support has been fundamental to the success of this project and on behalf of the Fletcher Arrow Joint Venture, thank you for your contribution.”
